A 12-Week Workshop led by Elizabeth Reichert, M.A.

Elizabeth Reichert, M.S.

Date: Mondays from 7:00-8:30 p.m., starting soon (when enough participants have registered)

Location: RICBT, North Kingstown

Workshop description: Managing your weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be extremely challenging. While logically, you may know what you need to do, various psychological barriers may stand in the way of achieving success. RICBT is pleased to offer a group designed for adults who struggle with maintaining healthy attitudes and behaviors about their body, eating, and exercise.

The group will be based on Judith Beck’s acclaimed book, The Beck Diet Solution - a step-by-step cognitive behavioral therapy-based program aimed at learning to think differently to be able to change one’s eating behavior. As such, the program will implement cognitive behavioral strategies to target specific challenges faced by individuals who struggle with weight loss. The program will aim to build motivation among group members to make changes to their lifestyle with the goal of losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program. With the guidance of a group therapist, participants will learn ways to respond to negative thinking that can inhibit progress and learn how to reduce stress around the topic of weight management.  Participants will work towards reducing fear and anxiety associated with weight, and learn how to increase one’s tolerance of hunger and cravings. Participants will learn how to identify triggers and learn various problem-solving strategies to manage healthy patterns of eating and exercise on a  daily basis. Step-by-step, group members will acquire strategies aimed at preventing relapse and learn about the importance of self-motivation and ways to maintain long-term adherence to a healthier lifestyle.

This 3-month group will involve an introduction to the topics of eating, exercise, and weight management and will cover issues around motivation, healthy attitudes, skills to increase efficacy, the importance of self-monitoring, and the psychological aspects of weight management that may “get in the way” of making healthy lifestyle changes. This group will provide a supportive community that goes beyond the basics of nutrition and gym routines, to address the bigger issues that often prevent individuals from safely and successfully making maintaining healthy lifestyle changes. Perhaps most importantly, group members will learn to “think differently” about eating and food.
