Weight Loss:  Why Hasn't It Worked?!...And What to Do About It

Led by Wendy Ossman, Psy.D.

Length of Workshop: 4 weeks

Time and Dates: A Wednesday evening, to be announced

Location: RICBT, North Kingstown

Seminar Description: This three hour seminar is designed for individuals who have struggled with their weight and have been unsuccessful in previous attempts to either lose weight or keep off weight once they’ve lost it.  It focuses on the psychological aspects of weight loss, something that is rarely addressed outside of the term “emotional eater.” The people for whom this seminar is intended consistently hear that weight loss is predominately a physiological process: eat this, don’t eat that, exercise, take the stairs, wear a pedometer, measure your food, count your calories, good carbs, bad carbs, good fats, bad fats, etc. You know all of this only too well; you’re just not doing it – at least not consistently. You are not alone! Consider the idea that as a society we have never been more educated about diet and nutrition and yet we have never been more overweight. Further, we've never had more resources at our disposal to lose weight, and yet we have never had more excuses. The psychology of weight loss is about understanding why you do what you do and how to do things differently.  You will learn about the function of your current relationship with food, differentiate that from the role that you want food to have, and learn how to change your behavior.

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life!

Led by Wendy Ossman, Psy.D.

Length of Workshop:  12 weeks

Date: A Wednesday evening, to be announced

Location: To be announced

Seminar Description: Many people have the tendency to over-think or get stuck in their heads. Equal numbers of people struggle with getting stuck in emotions or trying not to feel what they feel. Popular culture would lead us to believe that in order to be healthy and happy, we need to feel good all of the time and not feel pain or discomfort. But, what if pain and discomfort are inevitable parts of the human condition and the efforts not to feel pain are the source of our suffering and unhappiness? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a relatively new, scientifically based psychotherapy that takes a fresh perspective on why people suffer and what it means to be mentally healthy. ACT is not about fighting your pain, but developing a willingness to embrace discomfort and thereby provide yourself with the freedom to do whatever you want to do in life without letting your thoughts or emotions stop you. ACT is effective for a wide range of psychological problems, therefore, this group would be beneficial for most any human being who has found it difficult to be happy.

Men's Group:  Focus on Relationship Issues

Led by Joe G., Psy.D.

Date: Weekly on Saturdays, 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.

Location: RICBT, North Kingstown

Seminar Description:

This weekly small group meeting focuses on offering men an opportunity to openly discuss aspects of their lives and experiences.  Some men may generally believe that voicing thier feelings about issues such as relationships, commitment, anger, fatherhood, and stress related to trying to conform to "stereotypical male role models," is taboo.  The result?  Possible feelings of frustration and isolation.  As a result, having a group of men that are going through similar situations may provide an opportunity to vent and learn skills for coping with such difficulties.

People Who Might be Interested:
  • Men who are in the process of becoming separated/divorced
  • Men who are having problematic relationships with significant others
  • Men who are trying to repair or rebuild relationships
  • Men struggling with marital and parenting issues
Goals for the Workshop:
  • Participants will get greater clarity around their specific patterns when functioning in relationships.  Specifically, they will learn what makes them anxious, how they cope, what they tend to avoid.
  • Participants will obtain a general understanding of the origins of any anxiety, insecurity, and guardedness they may have when relating to others.
  • Participants will gain a greater understanding of their concept of being a man, and how this concept effects their relationship with the other people in their lives.

Mom's Well-Being Group:  Strategies for Coping and Thriving

An 8-Week workshop led by Claire Nicogossian, Psy.D., Postdoctoral FellowDesigned by Claire and Ben Johnson, Ph.D., ABPP

Date: Mondays, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., exact date to be announced

Location: RICBT, Inc., North Kingstown, RI

Workshop Description: Being a mother can be rewarding, demanding and stressful.  Moms often have multiple responsibilities every day, including getting the kids fed, dressed, and off to school, driving them around to activities, play-dates or sporting events, and making sure homework is done.  And it doesn’t end there!  The tasks of living--laundry, cooking, cleaning, and shopping--can feel like never-ending chores.  In the midst of all of these challenges, mothers may also work outside the home, volunteer in the community and school, and nurture relationships with their spouse, friends and family. In response to the demands of motherhood, women might feel overwhelmed, worried, isolated, depressed, helpless, anxious or frustrated.  They might have a sense of losing their identity.  In the role of caregiver, mothers often put themselves last on the list of priorities.  Here at RICBT, we want to support mothers (with children of any age) and help them to thrive. We are offering a group for mothers where they can learn skills and strategies to enhance coping and achieve balance in their lives.  Moms in this group will learn to manage their emotions and reactions, develop healthy coping behaviors, find ways to communicate effectively with children, spouses, and other relationships, and improve self-esteem and self-acceptance

Cost: The cost of this eight week series is $240.

Special Registration Information: Attendance is limited to 9 people, on a first-to-register basis. Individuals may participate in both the Monthly Mom's Group and the 8-week series (either simultaneously or separately).  They are designed to work well together.

Managing your Mood with Cognitive Therapy:
Coping with Sadness, Anxiety, Anger, Guilt, and Shame

A 12-Week Workshop led by Julie Pearson, LICSW

Date: Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Location: RICBT, Inc., North Kingstown, RI

Workshop Description: This is a group for men and women who would like to learn skills to manage a variety of negative moods including sadness and depression, anxiety and panic, anger and irritability, guilt, and shame.  The group teaches members the cognitive therapy approach to emotional problems.  Cognitive therapy is a well-researched approach that emphasizes connections between the situations in our lives, the way we filter and perceive those situations, and how our perceptions impact our feelings and behavior.  Using a workbook called Mind Over Mood, the group helps individuals to examine and change their patterns of thinking and behaving.  As individuals learn to challenge and restructure their thought patterns, and act more effectively in situations, they become much less vulnerable to negative moods and much better able to manage these moods when they do occur.  The workshop also deals with underlying negative "core beliefs" that were often learned in childhood and that render individuals vulnerable to dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs in adulthood.

Cost: The cost of this 12-week series is $480 (plus the $25 Mind Over Mood workbook).  Some patients choose to use their health insurance to pay for part of this workshop.  Feel free to discuss the options with us.

Special Registration Information: Please call our Intake Coordinators at (401) 294-0451 and let them know that you would like to be evaluated for the group.  They will schedule you a meeting with Julie Pearson, LICSW.  Julie will provide registration forms if she believes the group would be a good match for your needs.  Attendance is limited to 9 people, on a first-to-register basis.
