Background

Dr. Johnson received his B.A. from Williams College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He completed his internship and postdoctoral fellowship in clinical psychology at Brown University. He served as staff psychologist on the Mood Disorders Program at Rhode Island Hospital from 1998 through 2002, when he founded RICBT. Dr. Johnson is a clinical faculty member at Brown and supervises psychiatry and psychology trainees in cognitive-behavioral therapy. He also conducts a series of seminars for psychiatry residents on supportive therapy and the basics of being a truly helpful and authentic psychotherapist. He is a board-certified member of both the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and the American Board of Professional Psychology (Division of Cognitive & Behavioral Psychology). He is particularly interested in treating individuals who struggle with anxiety problems, such as social anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, and worries. His approach emphasizes confronting challenging issues in the context of an extremely supportive therapeutic relationship.

Practice Philosophy

I am the Director of RICBT, with offices in both East Providence and North Kingstown, RI. I specialize in helping individuals overcome anxiety and phobias, depression, and a wide variety of other late adolecent and adult problems. My ideal client is someone who wants a warm and connected therapeutic relationship, who is interested in learning strategies to improve moods, habits, and relationships, and who is appreciative of the accountability that therapy provides. My ideal client also appreciates my flexible style, my determination to help, and my wide-ranging knowledge of therapeutic strategies.

I am board certified in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology. For me, being a cognitive-behavioral therapist means that I value what research and science has to say about how to help people change. For problems such as panic disorder, OCD, social anxiety, and depression, I start with well-proven strategies.

I think that I, and all clinicians at RICBT, offer a unique blend of compassion and expertise. I believe that I make therapy a uniquely safe place to discuss even the most difficult concerns, and then work to make meaningful changes.

I enjoy helping people with all sorts of problems and issues.  These include but are by no means limited to anxiety problems, self-acceptance work, career issues, and relationship difficulties.  I also like helping people with maximizing their productivity and accomplishing highly ambitious goals.
